How important is having a degree in today's society?

I would say a degree is really important if you really want a good chance of going anywhere in life. Im not saying you have to have one but it does help. You can also be proud that you accomplished it in the end giving you more self esteem. If you really have no idea what you are interested in I would talk to a counselor at your university. They have services that help you pick a major that you would be motivated with. If you have some idea then take a cl in that area or talk to one of the professors in that discipline. If you don't like m communications than you shouldn't be wasting your time or money to continue taking cles.
