Hamlet- uncomfortable situations?
Hamlet's speech about Fortinbras. Is it really OK to send thousands of men to their deaths "for a straw" because "honor's" at stake? What kind of honor is that? Many people interpret that speech uncritically, in they same way they uncritically accept similar sentiments from modern politicians. But I believe Shakespeare wanted to shock the audience with that speech - shock them into questioning Hamlet's inherited warlike value system - and perhaps their own. The speech was also intended to shock Hamlet into realizing where his father's ghost was leading him - "to be or not to be"..."so like the king THAT was and IS THE QUESTION of these wars."
